Osmosis protection and treatment, epoxy glass sheathing

Osmosis protection and treatment, epoxy glass sheathing

As an approved Blake’s osmosis treatment centre we at Baltic Wharf offer a first class and professional service. We have over 20 years experience in assessing, controlling and treating osmosis in a wide variety of vessels, both sail and motor.  This experience tells us that a layer of glass / epoxy resin incorporated in the treatment will give a superior and longer lasting solution.  We offer a three year warranty with all Osmosis treatments that include the application of this additional laminate.

When checking your vessel for osmosis one the first signs you see will be blisters forming in the gel coat under the waterline. If you pierce the blisters and there is a smell similar to vinegar in the liquid it is in all probability osmosis.

The removal of the gel coat below the waterline is the first stage of any Osmosis blistering treatment and gelcoat peeling is widely accepted as the most cost effective system for guaranteeing an assured repair. Once this is done, the underlying laminate can be closely examined.

The exposed laminate is then lightly grit blasted and completely dried with a Hot Vac machine. This system is capable not only drying the laminate but also removing the contaminants that are left as the by-products of osmosis. This process also facilitates the detection of other laminate defects, which if left untreated will cause further problems once the hull is re-epoxied.

Prior to application of any coatings, the vessel is then hot pressure washed in the workshop. We will not proceed with the coating process until the hull surface has been assessed and signed off by an independent YDSA surveyor.

The treatment then consists of laminating, priming, filling / fairing and multiple coat application of solvent free epoxy products and then finally the antifouling.
